Things you should know about GRE 2012-2013 Exam

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States,in other English-speaking countries and for English-taught graduate and business programs world-wide.
The organizer of this examination is Education Testing Services (ETS), a non profit organization located in America. This exam is an online exam which is based upon the concept of Computerized Adaptive Test (CAT).
The cost of application varies from year to year as well from country to country. On an average the cost of application will be $ 160-210. The applications can be downloaded from the ETS website.
Computerized Adaptive Test (CAT) means that the computer will display the questions based upon the level of difficulty i.e. the easiest question is asked followed by difficult question then the most difficult question and it continues in the same manner.
The answers are evaluated based upon the concept of Item Response Theory (IRT).
This online examination is divided into three sections namely
Section 1 – Verbal reasoning (30 questions and duration is 30 minutes)
Section 2 – quantitative aptitude (28 questions and duration is 45 minutes)
Section 3 – Analytical written assessment (issue Task & argument task) (candidates must draft 2 essay and the duration depends upon the ability for the candidate).
GRE 2013 Exam – Tips & Strategies for improved GRE Score
  • Before you appear in this test know the sections of the test, the type of questions asked in each section, how many questions are asked in a particular section and the time allotted for each section.
  • Attempt as many GRE practice tests and GRE sample tests as possible, as they will familiarize with the general level of the questions that are asked in GRE exam and the directions for questions.
  • Read the instruction carefully before attempting a question in the actual test.
  • In the Analytical Writing assessment section, there are two questions one is “Analyze an Issue” task and one “Analyze an Argument” task, analyze the issue and write your views on it. But, don’t start writing pros and cons of the issue. Since, it is your views that have been asked for, be specific and write only about your viewpoints.
  • The second essay in the Writing Assessment section is the Argument task. It does not offer any choice. You will be given a topic, which you have to critically analyze and evaluate and determine whether it is well-reasoned or not.
  • GRE tries to adjust the test according to the level of the candidate. The first few questions are of medium level. If you answer it correctly, you will be asked harder questions. The incorrect answer will lead you to easier questions.
  • In this new pattern of computer adaptive test, it allows students to edit or change their answer and skip questions, all within a section, and use an on-screen calculator.
  • Optimizing time is very important in GRE. You should be aware how much time you can devote on one question. You need to set your pace right. Rushing or sticking to a question for too long will cost you valuable scores.
  • Sometimes, you will find a question similar to what has already been asked in the test or in another section of the test. However, often these questions have substantial or subtle modifications and require different answer. So, pay close attention to the wording of each question before you decide on an answer.
  • Lastly, you may consider canceling the test scores immediately after taking the GRE exam or quit the exam, so that the scores do not get noted in your permanent record. Unfortunately, you have to do it before you can see the test scores and the fees of the exam will not be refunded. This will also mean that you will have to gain register for the exam and pay the fee, to be able to re-take the exam and send the GRE scores to your chosen universities.
  • If you do cancel your GRE scores, this will be noted in your official GRE score report.
It is not allowed to cancel the scores of only one section of the test. The test scores of the test are valid for five years.
You can register online here for GRE and find more details at ETS website

GMAT Exam: Things you should know

Ashish Bhardwaj, Vice President Asia Pacific, Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) took us inside the world of GMAT.
There has been a steady growth in the acceptance of GMAT scores amongst business schools in India. In 2007, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores were accepted at 37 different programmes in 23 business schools across the country. Today, GMAT scores are accepted for nearly 185 programmes at 83 business schools in India. This represents a 300 per cent growth in acceptance in just five years.

The test has already been ratified, by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Supreme Court of India, as one of the admission tests whose scores can be accepted to admit candidates for PGDM programmes approved by AICTE. This has further enhanced the acceptance of results among Indian institutes.

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which owns the test, also has a growing association with some of the top business institutes in the country. Of GMAC's 211 member schools worldwide, nine member schools are in India. These include ISB Hyderabad, IIM Ahmedabad, SPJIMR Mumbai, IIM Bangalore, XLRI Jamshedpur, IIM Calcutta, Great Lakes Chennai, IIM Lucknow and School of Management and NMIMS University. Apart from these schools, GMAC has also recently begun supporting the needs of other business schools such as IIM Indore, IMT Ghaziabad, IIM Ranchi, TAPMI Manipal, IIM Shillong, IMI Delhi, MICAAhmedabad, IIM Raipur, PSGIM Coimbatore and MDI Gurgaon.

The GMAT is available on demand round the year at 20 test centres in 18 cities across India. This allows candidates to take the test when they are ready and well prepared for it. The scores are presently accepted at over 5,700 programmes at more than 2,200 business schools in all corners of the world.

The courses that accept GMAT range from various pre-experience specialist masters programmes (ideal for undergraduates who do not have any work experience) to the full-time MBA course (ideal for candidates that have work experience). The scores are also accepted for part time and online management programmes (ideal for candidates who do not wish to disrupt their work while they study) as well as Executive MBA programmes (ideal for middle to senior management who wish to accelerate their careers).

This makes the GMAT a very candidatefriendly test. To ensure that the test is fair to all, the GMAC has set up the highest commitment to test security. Candidates taking the GMAT are required to carry their passport as ID, provide their biometrics through a palm vein scanner and additionally, be aware of test security guidelines. I would suggest candidates visit mba.com to know more about GMAT, discover a world of interactive preparatory materials and to get their studies started on the right note.

Three Signs You May Need a GMAT Prep Class

If you got a less-than-desirable GMAT score, could a class help you do better? Make an educated decision by diagnosing your test performance

How good are you at analysing data?
How good are you at analysing data?
Advice from Dr. Ajay Amar, President and Founder of Austin GMAT Review.

Not everyone needs a GMAT prep course – but you might get better results if you take one. How do you know if taking a GMAT course might boost your score? Here are the top tell-tale signs, based on data aggregated over the past five years from people who came to Austin GMAT Review for help after getting less-than-desired GMAT scores on their own.

1. You thought you were good at math, but your GMAT verbal score is higher than your quant score.

Being strong at math does not guarantee a strong performance in the GMAT quant section. Why? Because the GMAT math questions are designed to measure multi-step reasoning, not just math knowledge. The questions are very different than what you were tested on in your high-school math class or even in college.

Do not despair. With the right preparation focused on what GMAT is testing, you should be able to perform better. Head to class, then try again.

2. You are a native English speaker, but your GMAT verbal score is below the 70th percentile.

If English is not your first language, the GMAT verbal section may be your highest hurdle, and you may need to get help. You can learn the rules of English grammar and logic.

In fact, the non-native English speaker may end up testing better in GMAT verbal than the native English speaker who has developed careless grammatical habits.

If English is your first language, and you flubbed the GMAT verbal section, you probably fell into a common trap: You assumed that because a sentence “sounded right,” it was right. You were wrong. When it comes to GMAT verbal, you must know the rules.

Expert instruction can help you discover what you didn’t know. Head to class, then try again.

3. After studying faithfully for months, you took the GMAT. It did not go as well as you hoped. You studied more, took the GMAT again, and got the same score.

I don’t know your personal circumstances, but I have two guesses as to what happened. Guess #1: You’re not using the process of elimination to solve the GMAT verbal questions. Guess #2: You’re relying heavily on elimination in the GMAT quant section.

Reverse that strategy.

For GMAT verbal questions, eliminate the wrong answer choices to find the right answer. In GMAT quant, if you have a solid math foundation, you shouldn’t need the answer choices. Do the math for a question, and select the right choice based on the answer at which you arrived.

You can get to a certain level on your own and then stall. More practice using the same methods probably won’t help if what you actually need is a new set of tools. Head to class, then try again.

4. Bonus Sign that You May Need a GMAT Class: You have a heavy work schedule / active social life / kids.

Whether you are a workaholic, social butterfly, and/or minivan driver, you have conflicting obligations. If you keep finding reasons to put off studying, a GMAT prep class may be the right option. The combination of dedicated class hours, curriculum, supportive instructor, and like-minded students can help provide you with focus and keep you on track.

A well-structured GMAT course will also save you time.  You’ll spend less time figuring out the best approach to take toward the exam than you would on your own. Look for a course that does not require you to spend a lot of time on your own working through materials (or you’ll be back to self-study). If you’re taking an in-person class, check out the instructor. Ideally, the instructor should not only have scored well on the GMAT, but also have teaching experience – you want someone who can coach you to your best score. Ask around for recommendations, and look for reviews.

If you’ve taken the GMAT (practice or the real thing), read the signs. Think you can do better? Start checking out GMAT courses.
